The BMX revolution began in the 1970s with the birth of an innovative group of young Southern Californians. These guys started with their Schwinn Sting-Ray and other bikes with grip on the motocross tracks in the area.
These small bikes were an ideal choice for a quick ride because they were easy to build and install with little extra equipment, and were also easy to ride at higher speeds on unpaved roads.

That’s how the BMX bike was born. A multifunctional bike that is not only ideal for speed and racing, but has also become a favorite for tube and park fans.
What’s a BMX? We know it started in the 1970s, but what do those three letters mean? BMX – abbreviation for Bike Motocross to Motocross.
These are BMX-type bikes, which can be used for road racing or freestyle. Both styles use the same bike, but depending on your riding style, the characteristics of the bike may differ.
As with the sport, BMX bikes have come a long way since the 1970s. They are still simple and most of them have very few new features added.
However, the bike manufacturers have developed frames that are adapted to the different driving styles that BMX enthusiasts appreciate.
Today’s BMX bikes are just as specific as road and mountain bikes. And thanks to this variety of riding styles, the choice of options for BMX bikes is almost limitless.

Why do adults drive a BMX?
Why wouldn’t I?
BMX is a sport as varied as road cycling and mountain biking. However, this question is often asked when you see adult men and women on small BMX bikes.
Today BMX is just as popular with adults as it is with children. And given that motorcycle manufacturers are developing a range of BMX frames and features that range from inexpensive to expensive, it makes sense for adults to want to ride BMX.
Nostalgia
It’s as good a reason for adults to drive as it is for anyone else. For those of us who grew up in BMX, it can be difficult to give up the habit as it were.
We may have a job and a family, but BMXing, touring or touring quickly makes us feel young and takes us back to an easier time when we just wanted to be home before dark.
More money
If you’re a child, take a bike your parents can afford. As an adult, with a job, you can afford a better bike. You don’t have to settle for the essentials anymore.
With a better cash flow it is easier to build the desired bike with the desired parts. And if you always participate in motocross or freestyle, a good bike with the right characteristics can give you an edge over the competition.
Best bikes
This is largely the reason why adults keep driving BMX. The bikes of our youth weren’t that big. Today’s BMX bikes are lighter, faster and actually designed for certain riding styles.
Not to mention the fact that the parts you can buy today didn’t exist when we were kids, so building and riding a bike is more fun than back then. Oh, did we mention we have more money for cool stuff?
Better information
We waited month after month for our favorite BMX magazine to come in the mail. Social networks and the internet have facilitated access to the BMX community.
We can watch videos on YouTube with our favorite professionals, we can share experiences and thoughts about programs and components. And we can even make money by sharing our experiences in social networks. And more money means better bikes…
Now that we’ve been introducing you to BMX for a while now and adults still think it’s as cool as it was when they were kids, it’s time to get on the bikes we love.
In this overview we present our favourite bikes on the market and the pros and cons of each, so you can choose the one that suits you best. Next we will discuss some burning questions about BMX bikes and how to ride BMX.

BMX FAQ
Now that we’ve shown you our favourite bikes and given you our tips for buying the right BMX bike, it’s time to delve into the current BMX issues.
We searched on the internet for the most frequently asked questions about BMXing and riding a BMX bike, then we looked at the answers and merged them here. We did the work, so you don’t have to do it.
What is the difference between a BMX and a normal bicycle?
BMX bikes differ from conventional bikes in many ways. It is these differences that make a BMX bike as useful as a race track and a road bike.
However, it is important to note that the characteristics that make a BMX bike unique compared to other bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes, commuter bikes and other cycling styles each have characteristics that make them unique and specialized for a particular riding style. These are some of the features that make a BMX bike unique:
- size – The frame and wheels of the BMX bike are much smaller than those of other types of bikes. This size can make it look like adults are riding a children’s bike. However, BMX’s small size makes it ideal for circuit racing and laps.
- No brakes – Most BMX bikes have no brakes. Removing the brakes makes the bike lighter and more manoeuvrable. Some motorcyclists use brakes to make riding easier, but in most cases BMX bikes stop by pressing the foot on the handlebars.
- Unicycles – BMX bikes do not normally have a gearbox. To ride BMX, you don’t need equipment that makes it easy to ride on roads and mountain bikes. In fact, the addition of components needed for the gears adds extra weight. And the strings for the derailleur levers make it difficult to perform many freestyle tricks.
- Single wheel size – Until recently, 20-inch wheels were used on all BMX bikes. While this is still the case for most BMX bikes, there are a few BMX bikes for larger riders who now ride with slightly larger wheels.
- Fun Training – As we age, the gym becomes more of a necessity than an option. With BMX, adults can train in a fun way without the monotony of the gym. BMX is a great whole body workout that can increase your cardiovascular strength and endurance.
Apart from these differences, BMX bikes are just as adaptable as other styles of bike. With the exception of shifting gears, drivers can add special brakes, pegs, tyres, wheels and other parts to make driving easier or to adapt to a particular style of freestyle or racing, depending on their driving style.
What is a 20-inch BMX wheel used for?
This is one of the characteristics of BMX bikes that makes them most unique. All BMX bikes have 20-inch wheels. This small size makes them ideal for racing and touring.
In the early years of BMX, most cyclists, including adults, used different specific bicycle models. These small bikes without gears or brakes are ideal for high speeds and rudder results.
The 20-inch BMX bike is suitable for all age groups. It is this characteristic that makes BMX seem too small for many adult motorcyclists. Some BMX bikes are currently equipped with slightly larger wheels, today there are BMX bikes with 22 and 24 inch wheels.
These BMX bikes are designed for tall cyclists who cannot get the right leverage or distance with smaller 20 inch wheels.
In addition, BMX bikes have 12-inch wheels for the smallest cyclists under one metre high. Many BMX riders over one metre long switch to conventional 20-inch engines.
It is important to note that, as with other styles of bicycles, there is a difference in frame size between BMX type bikes. The size of bikes, even BMX bikes, generally does not depend on age, but rather on the size of the cyclist. Logically, a smaller bike would be preferable for a young person or child.
Which size BMX should I take?
To return to the previous paragraph : Most riders, if they are not very long or very short, will use a 20-inch wheel. This size remains true to all BMX riding styles and you will find no difference in size between a road BMX bike and a freestyle BMX bike.
If you measure a BMX bike yourself, it is more important to measure the top tube. The length of the top tube is better suited for a bicycle suitable for cyclists of different sizes.
The length of the top tube on BMX bikes doesn’t vary much, but this variation is enough to change the fit and performance of riders of different sizes.
BMX bikes have their own dimensions, which differ from other types of bikes. When you buy a BMX bike, it is useful to know which size BMX bike is best for you.
RIDER HEIGHT (LEGS) | BMX bicycle size |
3’3 à 4 | Micro-Mini |
4′ à 4′ 6 | Mini |
4’6 à 4’10 | Junior |
4.8-5.4 inches | Expert |
5’4 à 5’10 | Pro |
5’8 à 6 | Pro XL |
6′ or more | About XXL |
Please note that although the size of the top tube may vary depending on the length of the rider, most bikes of this size come standard with a 20-inch wheel, a BMX brand.
Why are BMX bikes so small?
The modern BMX bike is the same as the original BMX bike from the 70s. The original BMX, Schwinn Stingray, was a small bike, like many similar styled bikes on the market at the time BMX became popular.
Today BMX has changed little compared to the original small bikes from the 70s. The slow growth of these bikes, both in the current version and in the version that was popular in the 70’s and 80’s, makes them really popular with cyclists and makes them versatile for different riding styles.
Speed
The BMX’s small size makes it ideal for fast driving. With smaller frames and fewer parts, BMX bikes work fast. This is ideal for motorcyclists who need to keep their bike light.
On most BMX bikes that use a 20-inch wheel, the advantage in terms of speed is to keep the frame small and to increase the length of the pedal curve.
BMX riders tend to stand during the race to increase power without adding extra speed. The small size keeps your bike light, which means more power and speed, even without shifting gears.
Maneuverability
On the other hand, freestyle enthusiasts appreciate the small size of the BMX bike, as it facilitates manoeuvres with tricks, jumps and parking.
The small size of the BMX frame allows the freestyler to rotate the bike in different directions without having to worry about getting tangled up in the frame.
The small size and light weight of BMX also means a high jump height and a bike that is easier to jump and move with a 1.25 m hose.
Does BMX create muscles?
As with any other physical or sporting activity, BMX skiing offers many health benefits. BMXers can expect an increase in endurance and cardiovascular strength from this activity.
The amount of strength and the parts of the body that build muscle can vary, depending on the BMX driving style in which you participate. On the whole, however, BMX is a great workout for the whole body.
People participating in BMX racing can expect the greatest increase in muscle mass in the lower body. Cycling a BMX bike at one speed over hills and bumps on a motocross track requires relatively little physical strength.
Over time, the effort the pedal has to make to walk fast enough on the track will strengthen your leg muscles.
Racing does not require the same upper body strength, so BMX riders may want to spend some time in the gym with the upper body if they want the upper body strength to match the lower body strength.
Freestylers benefit from a full body workout and can rely on upper and lower body strength. Freestyle requires strength in the legs in order to kick and to develop sufficient strength and endurance for tricks and jumps.
At the same time, freestyle requires sufficient upper body force to pull the wheel up for tricks. This combined upper and lower body effort produces the muscles of the arms and legs.
Can you BMX long distance?
The answer to these questions is of course that you can drive BMX over long distances. The most important question is whether you really want to ride BMX on long distances.
Many people grew up on BMX-type bikes, and when a BMX-type bike was the latest on the market, children used it everywhere.
Many adults can tell stories about how they spend most of the summer cycling in the city, coming home to friends and coming back on their BMX. Many children ride kilometres a day on their BMX bikes.
However, BMX is not designed for long distances. Today’s BMX bikes are designed to suit a particular riding style, whether racing or freestyle.
But even racing bikes are not designed to allow the rider to cover long distances. The frame size is a limiting factor when it comes to the distance on a BMX bike. Although the pedal grips are designed to provide a good lever for generating speed, they are not designed to allow the rider to sit and ride.
Most BMX bikes are more efficient when the rider is on the pedals. It is possible to ride BMX for long distances, but most riders may feel uncomfortable due to the size and shape of the frame.
Does the BMX brake have?
BMX bikes traditionally had no brakes. However, as the sport has evolved, some BMX riders, especially freestyle riders, have benefited from the use of brakes, and some road bikes used in racing are now equipped with brakes.
Traditionally BMX bikes used the brakes to pump or were stopped by a cyclist pulling his legs off the bike. The parking brakes so that the cyclist can press the pedals to bring the bicycle to a standstill.
It was a popular braking style on many bikes, especially with children in the seventies and eighties. They are easy to use and require no cables from the steering wheel to the brake.
These two types of brakes are still very popular on BMX bikes and for a cyclist who wants a light, cordless bike, drag and drop remains the preferred braking method.
Unlike disc brakes, BMX bikes with brakes generally use rim brakes in one form or another. Wheel brakes are generally cheap, easy to repair and adjust and lightweight. Many freestylers will use U-brakes.
This type of rim brake has a minimum number of pulling forces and is mounted close enough to the forks so as not to obstruct manoeuvring. Rim brakes can also be found on BMX racing bikes to provide better control and faster stops when needed.
What is the speed of BMX bikes?
The speed of a BMX bike is directly dependent on the power with which the rider rides. The Olympic BMX drivers were seen on the slope to the track at a speed of about 35 miles per hour.
This initial speed can be maintained or increased depending on the route and efficiency of the driver’s pedals. During the races the speed is also limited by the conditions on the track. A dry track may be more suitable for higher speeds, while a wet and dirty track may slow the rider down.
Some drivers reported reaching a speed of about 40 miles per hour when driving on asphalt. However, these speeds are not confirmed and given the proximity to the ground, high speeds on a BMX bike, especially on asphalt or concrete, can be dangerous for the rider.
Is a BMX better than an ATV?
It’s about the perspective and the way you use the bike. Both BMX and mountain biking have moments when they are useful and moments when they are not the ideal bike.
BMX is best suited for tricks and driving at high speed over short distances. The small size of the BMX bike, in combination with the minimal parts, makes it an ideal option if you want to spend time in a skate park or on short unpaved roads.
BMX’s were originally built for this purpose, and this is where they shine.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a bike suitable for long distances, cross-country skiing, or just for riding on the dirt roads or paths in your area, a mountain bike may be the best option.
ATVs are generally equipped with a gearbox, have a higher shock load and a larger frame size which improves comfort over long distances and performance on the terrain, such as rocks and tree trunks.
It’s hard to say BMX is better than a mountain bike. Since the two have different objectives, each gives the driver a value in the parameters in which it should have been used. If you take them out of this arena, they may not offer the same level of efficiency or performance.
Is BMX driving dangerous?
Like any other sport, BMX has inherent risks and those who practice BMX or want to learn how to do so should understand the risks.
BMX racing is probably the most dangerous style of BMX. Runners move at high speed and in close proximity to other runners. This combination of speed and movement can make racing more dangerous than freestyle.
However, BMX riders can increase their safety by using protective equipment such as pads and a helmet. This does not reduce the risk of high-speed driving with other drivers, but it does limit damage if the driver is involved in an accident while driving.
Freestyle riding also carries risks, especially for cyclists who ride a half-point or four-point course. These motorcyclists also benefit from protective equipment such as padding and helmets.
Riders in the easy freestyle to music are probably at the lowest level of risk, but all riders should at least wear a helmet to protect their heads in case of a fall.
How can I make my BMX bike faster?
There are many ways to make your BMX bike faster and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to increase the speed.
It is the weight of the motorcycle that causes the greatest speed increase for most cyclists.
Here are some of our suggestions to increase the speed on a BMX bike:
- Spend some time in the gym – the stronger your feet, the easier you can kick. It’s an easy way to increase your speed without spending a lot of money or making changes to your bike.
- Remove the front brake – If your bicycle has front and rear brakes, remove the front brake. The rear brakes are safer to use in most situations. Therefore, they must be maintained and the additional weight and friction of the front brakes must be reduced.
- Change the gear – if you want to keep the gearbox on your bike, look for lightweight gears. If you can live without shifting gears, adjust the engine so that it only runs in one gear.
- Check your canisters – make sure your canisters are filled to the suggested PSI Even low pressure tyres slow you down.
- Invest in a lightweight frame – it can be an expensive option, but if you want to save money, a lightweight frame can really affect your driving speed.
There, it’s done. Our favourite BMX bikes and lots of information to get you started. We hope this report has given you the ideal starting point for riding and buying a BMX bike.
